Dear David, today I will write this letter to you about David Geffen and how he was “killed“ by the media and social media. I was mention this situation in my previous post: “Sex in the time of Coronavirus“.
But how everything was started? Last week David Geffen (77 years old) posted on his Instagram account a picture with his $590 million yacht: “Rising Sun“. But that wasn’t the problem. The hysteria that was created on social media was because at that photo he wrote: “Sunset last night…Isolated in the Grenadines avoiding the virus. I hope everybody is staying safe.”
Almost all the comments that David Geffen (an American business magnate, producer, film studio executive, and philanthropist) received on his IG was full of hate. To be very honest with you, that caption was a very BAD IDEA! huge mistake! I am sure – living in a bubble – he was very shocked about people’s reactions to media and social media. 🙂 Come on, David! Live in this REAL world!
The first thing he did was to make his account private. But that didn’t stop people who already follow him to continue to spread hate. Yes, because that post was a very bad PR for him! huge mistake! Especially when people started to talk and make jokes about Geffen on Twitter and Instagram. And also on the media. Articles and jokes appear on The New York Times, The Guardian, Esquire Middle East, Bloomberg, Business Insider, Jimmy Kimmel on his quarantine monologue… (on ABC)
Even musician John Mayer did a parody song about Geffen and his isolation on Instagram: “Drone shot of my yacht, it’s all I got, I’m all alone on the water.”… “Let me flex these specs, 450 feet, and six or seven decks. You can stretch your neck, to see all the stuff around me, I don’t give a heck.”
I am very surprised because John Mayer did a parody song about Geffen because his best friend is Andy Cohen. And Andy Cohen is a friend to David. Andy was invited to David yacht. Maybe David didn’t want then to invite John also and now the musician took this opportunity to make fun of David.
Anyway, because of all the jokes and hate, David eventually makes a nervous breakdown, and he delated his beloved Instagram official account.
But now, another Instagram account under his name appears. And he – if that account is the real David Geffen – is talking about PLP (means: Peace, Love, Positivity): David Geffen: Entrepreneur, Business magnate, producer, film studio executive, and philanthropist!
I would like to give to David Geffen a piece of advice, as I am also a PR/Marketing person: David, when you did that huge mistake on your I account, when you didn’t think of people’s reactions, none of your celebrity friends said anything. None of them was – publicly – on your side. And you know that. Even if you want to have friends to be your side public, they did it because they realize you did a stupid move and they don’t want to be hated by the public too! I suggest you stay a period low profile, stay safe and then do a huge donation, as you did before.
Give them millions and they will like you again! Because for you it is so important what people think about you. Yes, it is very true what I said. And I can understand that you can’t understand all those people’s reactions because you live in your very small world. A world that we – the real people – don’t live in.
I know you did in the past a lot of philanthropic work and you donated hundreds of millions to UCLA, to New York Philharmonic, to MoMA… but as you can see… When ONE TIME you did a mistake (let’s be honest) on your social media, on the public eye – people spread so much hate and criticize you and the respectable name that you work so hard to have it all your life.
One mistake from you and people shoot so easy on you. Which I think is not fair! Even for you!
Anyway,,, wash your hands, David. Especially on a boat!
BTW, because I wrote very nice about David Geffen on my previous post, I received some bad comments also on my DM and on email from people who hate Geffen. They think David Geffen paid me to write nicely about him! :))
Yours,
Il Principe AG

I am writing in this… bad English because I don’t know better English. It is not my mother tongue. But Bad English is still Good English! And I prefer to be better with tongue doing other… stuff.
